What began as a Saturday morning tradition during my childhood, “D3: Dads, Daughters and Donuts,” eventually transitioned into drinks with dad when I grew up. These days, about once a week, I meet Jim — Jimbo, Pops, Faja — for happy hour. We’re always trying new drink deals around town, so I figured why not share the wealth? — Becca Wright, associate editor

The Deal
Woodbar — Canopy’s neighboring spirits and coffee bar also owned by Claire Smith — offers happy hour everyday from 3 to 7 pm. The menu features $5 cocktails and select wines as well as $5 small bites like fried green tomatoes, smoked red pepper hummus and shrimp and grits fritters with creole aioli.

Comments
Woodbar’s atmosphere is calm and inviting — just what you need after a long, tiring day at work. It’s a small space, so your happy hour conversations will feel intimate. My dad and I relaxed over wine — a red for him, bubbles for me — and we ordered a few small plates to share. The creamy feta sauce that accompanied the fried eggplant and onion rings was thick and tangy (photo above); and the roasted broccoli, cauliflower and baby carrots were served with a rich saffron aioli (photo below). My dad has a thing for peculiar glassware, and he was especially infatuated with Woodbar’s Falcon Enamelware water cups. He insisted the bartender pour his wine into the mini tumbler. So I know Jim will want to return soon. “Becca, what was that place with the neat water cups? Let’s go there tonight.”
