Fall is a mythical season here in Houston, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy hearty dishes found on restaurants’ new seasonal menus and at least pretend that leaves are changing colors and evenings will bring crisp, cool temperatures. We did just that when we stopped in to Harold’s Restaurant, Bar & Terrace last week to try the new fall supper menu.

The new menu at Harold’s Restaurant – previously known as Harold’s in the Heights – launched at the end of September, and it continues to weave together executive chef Antoine Ware‘s New Orleans cooking style with owner Alli Jarrett‘s South Carolina roots.

Expect dishes like andouille sausage-stuffed quail ($24), cast iron chicken with mac ‘n’ cheese ($19) and she-crab soup ($12). Two seafood stunners on the new dinner menu are the greens-wrapped Gulf fish stuffed with blue crab served with black-eyed peas, tasso ragout and fresh tomato relish ($28, photo above) and Beaufort stew featuring shrimp sausage (with a polenta-like texture) served atop potatoes, corn and house-made andouille ($26, photo below).

For those rare Houston evenings that are actually chilly, the chicken-fried pork chop will warm you right up ($30, photo below). Served in a cast-iron skillet, the chicken-fried Chappapeela Farms pork chop sits alongside local vegetables and Atkinson Farms potatoes. The chop is topped with a foie gras gravy and mushrooms. Split this dish and a bottle of red while sitting on Harold’s intimate terrace – date night done right.

And downstairs at Harold’s Tap Room – formerly home to the Heights General Store – the cocktail menu has also switched over to fall. The menu, created by bar manager Lauren Muse, is a nod to the fall fanatic in all of us. The “Like, O.M.G.” ($10, photo below) – Muse expects you to order this in your best Valley girl accent – combines lemon- and ginger-infused vodka with house-made rumchata, topped with a flaming marshmallow. It’s a perfect after-dinner drink, reminiscent of a creamy milk punch.

The feeling of fall may not be in the air with sticky temperatures still reaching 90° F, but the flavors of fall are in full swing around town.
