A Snapshot of Tinys Milk & Cookies

Tiny Boxwoods and Tinys No. 5 have recently added their newest concept, Tinys Milk & Cookies. It just opened yesterday as a walk-up storefront that peeks out between two pretty blue barn doors right around the corner of Tinys No. 5, facing Edloe St. Warning: In the late afternoons, you’ll be joined by throngs of West University mothers and their children on the hunt for treats. We visited Milk & Cookies around 4 pm, just missing the after-school rush.

The shop is named after the Tiny’s justly famous chocolate chip cookie ($2.50), golden-crisp on the outside and sinfully gooey on the inside, created by Baron Doke, chef/owner of the Tinys trio. The bakery display holds many other pastries, too, such as cherry turnovers, donuts, chocolate-glazed scones and artisan breads. There are 10 house-made ice cream choices ranging from flavors like strawberry jam to “Holiday Cheer” (peppermint chocolate). Except for the coconut milk chocolate flavor (which is non-dairy), all are made in-house with Gramen Farms milk and organic eggs.

Besides the treats, Milk & Cookies also features a small breakfast menu with a fresh-squeezed juice of the day, breakfast tacos on Fridays and a full espresso bar. But today, we bee-lined for the sweets.

The coconut milk chocolate ice cream ($4 for a small, photo above) is spun with velvety coconut milk that leaves a pleasant aftertaste along with notes of cocoa. We found a quick solution to a messy affair with the home-made sugar cone (waffle cones are available, too) by crushing up the cone in the melting confection and scooping the combination out of a bowl. The folks at Milk & Cookies are still working out the kinks with the freezer and are aiming to ensure that the ice cream remains frosty cold when served.

The shop was out of donuts, but we happily tucked into a light turnover with red cherries hidden inside layers of soft puff pastry ($4.50, photo above). Probably out of guilt, we also ordered a sprightly carrot-orange juice ($6.50, photo above) for a sneak of vegetables.

Around us, kids slurped ice cream while their mothers sipped cold-brew coffees. Tiny’s location is a prime meet-up spot for the surrounding neighborhoods, and it is an ideal and much appreciated destination for sharing sweets and family fun. Open 7 am to 9 pm daily.
