We busted out of our Montrose bubble last week to continue on our BBQ Beat. Meat was on our mind, and The Brisket House, located on Woodway at Augusta, was the destination of the day.
The Woodway restaurant opened in May 2010, and it’s become a staple barbecue joint in the Tanglewood/Memorial area. The store has since opened two other locations in Deer Park and Cypress. They use only certified Angus briskets, and their sausages are custom-made by Ruffino Meats in Bryan,Texas.
First up, we ordered Wayne’s PB&J sandwich ($8.50, photo below), piled high with pulled pork, brisket and jalapeño sausage on a jalapeño cheese bun. It’s topped with slaw for some necessary creamy crunch. Ironically, the brisket at The Brisket House – a bit dry that day – was our least favorite meat of the meal. That being said, this specialty sandwich is still a real stunner, especially for the price. A dunk in some tangy barbecue sauce, and, bam, the moisture is back.
We next opted for the two-meat plate ($11.95, photo below) – since three already come on the sandwich. The turkey and pork ribs were both incredibly moist and packed with tons of smokey flavor. The Brisket House smokes its meats with a combination of oak and pecan wood. The smell will hit you as soon as you step into the small, strip center restaurant … and will stay with you for the rest of the day.
The pork ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender, as it literally fell off the bone onto the table. The charred crust was crunchy yet chewy, like a bit of candied meat.
The meat plate comes with two sides, and we kept things monochromatic with the cream corn and mac ‘n’ cheese. The cream corn could have used a bit of salt and pepper, but the mac ‘n’ cheese was as classic as it gets – creamy and subtle in flavor, as to not overwhelm the meat when scooped up together with a slice of white bread.
This was the fourth stop of our summer barbecue tour, and thanks to joints like The Brisket House, it’s been a real treat exploring Houston’s beefy barbecue. Stay tuned for our next visit.
