Dads, Daughters + Drinks: Aka Sushi House

Photos by Becca Wright

What began as a Saturday morning tradition during my childhood, “D3: Dads, Daughters and Donuts,” eventually transitioned into drinks with dad when I grew up. These days, about once a week, I meet Jim — Jimbo, Pops, Faja — for happy hour. We’re always trying new drink deals around town, so I figured why not share the wealth? — Becca Wright, associate editor

I love taking Jim out to sushi happy hour. I didn’t grow up eating sushi — or anything raw for that matter — but it’s become one of my favorite cuisine types. And I think I’m slowly turning my dad onto raw fish, too (that or he really likes Japanese beer). We often order the gyoza (pan-seared dumplings, $4.50), bacon-wrapped tomatoes ($3.75), squid and vegetable salad ($4.25, photo above), fire cracker shrimp ($5) and a few sushi rolls. One downside: it’s become quite a popular spot, and wait times can be lengthy.
