Twistee Treat, an ice cream chain from Florida, has expanded into the Lone Star State. They hit Houston near the end of last year with two locations – 3538 Highway 6 South and 7500 W. Tidwell – and a third just opened at 8880 Bellaire Blvd. in Sharpstown.
We stopped at the Sharpstown location recently and got the scoop on what Twistee Treat is serving. It won’t be hard to spot the ice cream shops, as the buildings are shaped like a soft serve ice cream cone. It’s kitschy, but in a good way.
When the window opens at the ordering counter, a gush of sweet vanilla aromas will hit you – it’s wildly intoxicating. Inside the cone-shaped restaurant, they are churning out “real ice cream freshly made in-house daily.”
Stick to the classic flavors like vanilla, chocolate and strawberry if you get overwhelmed with choices, but if you’re feeling fancy, try one of the premium flavors (additional 50 cents). Expect options like cotton candy, blackberry, caramel, amaretto, German chocolate, rum raisin, pistachio, piña colada and more. For your soft serve vehicle, you can choose a cup ($1.99-$3.39), cake cone ($1.99-$3.39) or waffle cone ($2.59-$3.49).
There are also Twirls (your choice of ice cream blended with candy, $2.99-$4.49), shakes and malts ($2.99-$4.09), sundaes (cherry, whipped cream and nuts, $3.69/$4.25) and slushies ($2.99).
Items that have become favorites (as designated on Twistee Treat’s menu) include a hot fudge brownie boat ($5.69), cookiewich ($3.99), banana split ($5.69) and waffle taco ($3.89, photo below). The taco-shaped waffle cone filled with vanilla ice cream and coated in rainbow sprinkles, chocolate sprinkles or chocolate chips is a bit silly and messy, but it’s a fun treat especially for the kids.
Houston can expect another location at 9720 Jones Road at Steeple Way in Jersey Village, and “many more” are on their way, according to the menu. Locations also include a drive-up window.
