Today’s Table Talk

Earlier this week the Tcholakian family, which is set to open a downtown location of their Phoenicia Specialty Foods in late July, announced that they were also opening MKT BAR alongside the supermarket. MKT BAR, to be located on Austin Street between McKinney and Lamar, will serve a variety of boutique wines and beers, gourmet pizza and signature fare, along with coffee, gelato and pastries

This Sunday (May 29), Urban Harvest’s Highland Village Farmers’ Market will celebrate Kids Day. There will be a mini petting zoo, an obstacle course and other games for kids. As always, Stick a Fork in It! will offer kids’ cooking classes every hour, and there will be arts and crafts at the Kids Table. Parents can relax meanwhile at the Community Table and enjoy live music, fresh coffee and brunch fare. Hours are 10 am to 2 pm. The market is at 2720 Suffolk, right behind the JoS. A. Bank store next to the railroad tracks … One of the MIA chefs we are most often asked about is long-time Tony’s chef Olivier Ciesielski. Finally, word on his plans: The Brownstone Cafe is set to open soon in the same location (2736 Virginia) where The Brownstone originally was. According to B4-u-eat.com, Ciesielski will be partner and chef, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner

As soon as Tony Vallone’s Caffe Bello (322 Westheimer) closed last month, rumors began flying that a Mexican restaurant was taking over its defunct location. Some industry-watchers guessed that Austin-based Vivo with chef Paul Petersen was going in there, as the San Felipe deal for a Houston Vivo had itself just flown apart. As it turns out, Don Julio’s Mexican Restaurant & Cantina has taken the space and begun remodeling. This location, their fifth, will be the company’s first inside-the-Loop restaurant. Look for a July debut. Next Thursday (June 2) Central Market in Highland Village celebrates their 10 year anniversary. The festivities include live music, food, wine and a little competition from 10 of Houston’s most desired chefs. Tickets are $100 and proceeds benefit Foodways Texas.
