Frieda’s, The Specialty Produce Company, recently shipped us a sample of a new white-fleshed apricot grown in Central California called Angelcot. These are a hybrid of Moroccan and Iranian apricot varieties, and there are only a few acres of this special fruit in the world.
They have very pale yellow skin color with a pale peach blush and very fine (almost non-existent) velvety fuzz. The inside flesh is extremely juicy. The fruit, in your hand, is so delicate and tender that it feels on the verge of collapsing.
If you’re one of those people who (like our grouchy editor here at My Table), stopped buying plums, nectarines and apricots years ago because they just didn’t seem to be any good any more, then give this newcomer a try. Angelcots are available at Central Market, HEB and Kroger here in Houston, and the season is very short. The producer suggests a drop of Cholula hot sauce on the fruit for a change-up.
