Off-the-menu mussels from Monarch at Hotel Zaza were some of the best we’ve had in years. Prepared by chef Adam West, we’re craving the Blue Moon and orange-zest broth that the shellfish were bathed in, along with its hints of ginger and red pepper. Go ask for an order of these mussels and convince management they belong permanently on the menu.

On Wednesday evening, we were invited to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and enjoyed a performance by talented equestrians, cowboys (and cowgirls) and country music singer Martina McBride. Also impressive: The “floated” baked potato we ordered just as we entered Reliant Stadium. What does a floated baked potato entail? Extra barbecue sauce and double sour cream on top of all the regular fixings of a chopped-beef baked potato — spilling off the plate and onto your lap during the barrel racing segment at no extra charge. Messy but worth it, of course. You can see all the rodeo food offerings here.

Valentine’s Day may have been nearly a month ago, but St. Patrick’s Day is a reasonable excuse to indulge in chocolate again. While enjoying a gorgeous March day in River Oaks Shopping Center, we stopped by Araya Artisan Chocolate (next to the River Oaks Theater) and treated ourselves to a few of their green chocolates. Locally made gems included a bite-sized milk and dark chocolate square with a pistachio garnish and a surprisingly good dark chocolate with undertones of a real margarita, topped with a tiny green edible jewel. Don’t knock it until you try it: The chocolatiers at Araya will let you sample chocolates before you commit. Create your own beautiful gift box and surprise your lucky charm, or make it a treat for yourself.
