Tucked inside Chinatown’s H Mart on Bellaire Boulevard, Tous Les Jours Bakery offers a grand array of baked goods and treats. From a quick on-the-go breakfast to a custom birthday party cake, this French-Asian bakery provides all sorts of intriguing choices. The bakery hails from South Korea and has numerous locations already within the United States. This particular location inside H Mart, which opened at the end of 2016, is the second in Houston. The other is in the Super H Mart on Blalock just north of I-10.

Mocha Cream Bread at Tous Les Jours

We stopped in to snack on some pastries and breads one quiet weekday afternoon, and the shelves were still fully stocked when we arrived – unlike at some Chinatown bakeries that often run out of baked goods in the afternoon and close early. After a leisurely survey of the options – donuts, croissants, tarts and loaves of thick-cut bread – we picked up a tray and a pair of tongs, then loaded up the tray. Our carb fest consisted of mocha cream bread ($2.59, photo above), a strawberry fruit pastry ($1.99), a sweet pumpkin donut ($1.99, photo below) and milk bread ($3.25).

Our favorites included the sweet pumpkin donut – a starchy dough fried to a delicate crisp and studded with black sesame seeds – and the milk bread (photo below). The milk bread featured a buttery, smooth texture – something like challah bread – and crumbled softly in our mouths. The mocha cream bread concealed layers of espresso cream and chunks of coffee jelly between slices.

H Mart in itself is a fun place to shop for Asian groceries and Korean dishes, and the addition of Tous Les Jours gives customers an incentive to linger a while and enjoy a cup of coffee along with a sweet treat.
